Asia woke up Tuesday in full panic mode. South Korea triggered a circuit breaker. Chip stocks got crushed. US futures followed everything lower. Not a good morning.
South Korea Went Into Emergency Mode
Kospi fell more than 10% Tuesday morning in Asia. That triggered a circuit breaker halt. Twenty minute pause to let everyone breathe and stop the bleeding from accelerating further. Circuit breakers exist for moments exactly like this one.
Japan was also down but not as dramatically. Nikkei 225 dropped 1.5% snapping an eight session winning streak. Broader Topix lost 0.8%. After weeks of markets going up in a pretty straight line investors were reminded Tuesday that the direction can change quickly.
US futures picked up what was happening in Asia and moved accordingly. Nasdaq futures down more than 2%. S&P 500 futures lost over 1%. Dow futures were close to flat which made them the calmest thing in a pretty anxious morning.
Chip Stocks Are the Center of This
Semiconductor names led the selling and the numbers were ugly. SK Hynix dropped more than 12% in Seoul. Samsung Electronics fell over 10%. Two of the biggest names in global chip manufacturing getting hit that hard in one session is a significant event.
These are companies that had been riding the AI spending wave hard. Data centers need chips. AI needs chips. Demand story has been strong. Stock prices reflected a lot of optimism about how long and how big that demand would stay.
Problem with stocks that have run up a lot on optimism is that they do not need bad news to fall. They just need someone to start asking whether the price still makes sense. When enough people ask that question at the same time the selling starts and it can move fast. That appears to be what happened Tuesday morning in Seoul.
Valuations in the chip sector have stretched significantly during this AI rally. When a sector gets expensive enough even small doubts can trigger large moves. SK Hynix and Samsung are examples of that playing out in real time.
Risk Assets Got Hit Too
Selling was not contained to equities. Bitcoin dropped below $62,000. When uncertainty spikes crypto is usually one of the first places traders reduce exposure. It is liquid, trades around the clock, and has no floor from fundamentals. Easy to sell quickly when you want cash or want to reduce risk.
SpaceX was also pointing to a rough Tuesday open. Pre-market indications showed another 3% decline coming. That would extend Monday’s 16% drop and push shares close to the $135 IPO price the company listed at just over a week ago. Stock that was up nearly 70% from IPO price at its peak is now looking at being close to flat from where it started. That is a dramatic reversal in a very short time.
AI Trade Is Being Tested Again
This week’s selling is another stress test for the AI investment thesis. The core argument has been that demand for AI infrastructure is so strong and so durable that the companies powering it deserve premium valuations. Chips, data centers, power, software. All of it.
That argument has not changed. AI spending is still real. Data center buildout is still happening. But the stocks reflecting that reality had priced in a lot of good news very quickly. When markets are priced for perfection any wobble can cause outsized reactions.
Question now is the same one that comes up every time a hot sector pulls back. Is this a healthy correction that resets valuations to more reasonable levels and then the trend resumes. Or is this the start of something bigger where the market decides the AI premium was too large and recalibrates more seriously.
Nobody knows the answer to that Tuesday morning. What happens over the next few sessions will give better clues. If buyers show up on the dips and support holds at key levels it probably looks more like a pullback. If each bounce gets sold into and lows keep breaking the conversation changes.
For now the mood is cautious and the selling pressure is real. Markets that had been celebrating peace deals and record highs just days ago are now dealing with a reminder that things can shift fast.
